**English translation**

This claim is **not currently true** — and it has been recently and specifically fact-checked as false.

**What Le Pen has actually said**

At present, Le Pen is not calling for a Frexit referendum if she becomes president. A recent fact-check confirmed that claims circulating on social media to this effect are false.

Marine Le Pen was once a keen proponent of a vote for France to leave the EU, following in the UK's footsteps. This was true historically — she made such promises in 2016-2017 (before her first presidential run against Macron), pledging to hold a nationwide referendum on France's EU membership if elected.

**How her position evolved**

Her stance shifted after that election: In the 2017 election, Le Pen's promise to hold a referendum on France's euro membership was ill-timed, coming two years after a Greek referendum led to another recession there, and the eurozone was beginning a boomlet that undercut her message; she made it to the second round but was easily beaten by Macron, and five years later, was no longer promising a euro referendum, though her euroscepticism endures.

By 2022, ahead of the run-off against Macron, she softened further, saying she would not block a Brexit-style referendum on whether France should pull out of the EU if the public organized one themselves, but stated that as president, she personally would not initiate an exit referendum — a subtle but important distinction from actively promising one.

**Current 2027 campaign**

Ahead of the 2027 presidential race, Le Pen, who's currently leading in first-round polling with roughly 33 to 36%, has suggested putting other issues to a public vote if she wins the presidency, including a referendum on combating so-called "Islamist ideologies" (such as banning the veil in public) and a vote on amending the constitution to restrict immigration — but not an EU membership referendum. This may have fuelled some of the online rumours about an alleged EU referendum, which appear to be a misunderstanding or misrepresentation of her actual current platform.

**Bottom line:** Le Pen historically promised a "Frexit" referendum, but has since abandoned that pledge, and her current 2027 campaign does not include a promise to hold a referendum on France leaving the EU.

**English translation**

No, that statement **is not currently true**. It is outdated or false information that has circulated on social media.

**What the facts say**

Marine Le Pen did defend the idea of a referendum on France leaving the EU ("Frexit") in the past:

- In July 2016, following Brexit, Marine Le Pen promised to organize a referendum on leaving the European Union if she were elected president.

- She made leaving the bloc and abandoning the euro two of her flagship proposals in the 2012 and 2017 presidential campaigns.

**However, she abandoned that stance years ago.** According to a recent Euronews fact-check (September 2026):

- The messages circulating, mainly in Spanish, provide no further details, which is the first clue that the statement is false: Le Pen is not proposing a referendum on Frexit if she becomes president.

- She has abandoned those proposals since then. During the 2022 campaign, she advocated instead for radically reforming the EU from within, stripping Brussels of most of its power and transforming the bloc into a looser alliance of nations.

- The RN dropped the idea of Frexit back in 2017, considering it electorally toxic, and now proposes a "Europe of nations" with a radical reform of the treaties.

**What she currently proposes**

For the 2027 campaign, her platform includes the abolition of the free movement of people (an end to Schengen), the primacy of French law over European law, disengagement from the current Common Agricultural Policy, and the defense of budgetary sovereignty against the Maastricht rules, but without proposing a formal exit from the EU.

In fact, the fact-check itself points out that although a Frexit referendum is not currently on the table, Le Pen has suggested submitting other topics to a public vote if she wins the presidency next year, which may have fueled online rumors about a supposed EU referendum.

**In short:** the claim is circulating as disinformation on social media, but it does not correspond to Le Pen's current position, who since 2017 replaced the "Frexit" proposal with that of reforming the EU from within without leaving it.

**Original text**

**English translation**

No, this statement is currently false. A recent fact-check by Euronews dating from September 2026 confirms that this rumor, which circulated on social media (particularly in Spanish), is unfounded: the posts provide no additional details, and that is our first clue that the claims are false: Le Pen is not calling for a referendum on Frexit if she becomes president.

**What is historically true:** Marine Le Pen did indeed defend this idea in the past. Following the British precedent, Le Pen had promised to organize a national referendum on France remaining in or leaving the European Union if she were elected president, stating that she would do so in France, in reference to the 2016 Brexit.

**But she has since abandoned this proposal:** According to Public Sénat, "Frexit is by no means our project, we want to reform the European Union from within […] Europe, we are in it, we are Europeans," she declared in 2022. Likewise, the proposal to organize a referendum on leaving the European Union within six months of the election, championed since 2014, has been abandoned.

**Current situation (2026-2027):** The Euronews fact-check confirms that she was once a fervent supporter of a vote for France to leave the EU, following the United Kingdom's example, but she has since abandoned these proposals regarding leaving the EU and the euro.

On the other hand, although a Frexit referendum is not currently on the agenda, Le Pen has suggested submitting other subjects to a popular vote if she wins the presidency, which may have fueled certain online rumors about a purported EU referendum. Her current proposals notably include a referendum on the fight against "Islamist ideologies," including a ban on wearing the veil in public spaces, as well as referendums on immigration.

**In summary:** the claim that Marine Le Pen is currently promising a referendum on France leaving the EU is **false**. This proposal was part of her platform several years ago (2012–2017), but she has explicitly abandoned it since, notably after observing the fears raised among the French by Brexit.

**Original text**

**English translation**

**No, that's not entirely true — at least, not right now**

This was indeed stated as true in the past: the leader of the French opposition party "National Front", Marine Le Pen, promised to hold a referendum on France's EU membership if elected president in 2017. Moreover, after the Brexit referendum, Front National leader Marine Le Pen promised to hold a French referendum on EU membership in the event of her victory in the presidential elections, but then-president François Hollande met with politicians, including Le Pen, after the vote and rejected her proposal for a referendum.

**But her position has changed**

According to a recent Euronews fact-check (September 2026), this information is already outdated: the publications, mostly in Spanish, contain no additional details — this is the first sign that the statements are false: Le Pen is not calling for a Frexit referendum if she becomes president. At the same time, the politician from the "National Rally" was once an active supporter of voting for France to leave the EU following the UK's example, but now a Frexit referendum is not currently on the agenda; Le Pen, who is currently leading in the first-round polls with about 33–36%, has proposed submitting other issues to a public vote.

**But she has not completely closed the topic**

It is worth noting a nuance: in February 2026, during the previous presidential campaign, Le Pen stated to Time magazine that if she wins the presidential election, she would not block a Brexit-style referendum on whether France should leave the European Union. At the same time, "in the case of a referendum that contradicts the fundamental interests of the country, the president and the National Assembly can oppose it, but this does not apply to leaving the EU" — meaning she allowed for the possibility that a popular initiative for a Frexit referendum could take place, even without it being her own direct initiative.

**Summary**

- **In the past (2016–2017)** — yes, Le Pen explicitly promised to hold a referendum on France leaving the EU if she became president.

- **Now (in the campaign ahead of the 2027 elections)** — she officially **does not put forward** such a promise as part of her platform; analysts and fact-checkers explicitly refute this. Instead, she promotes the idea of holding referendums on other issues (a "referendum revolution").

- At the same time, she does not rule out that such a referendum could theoretically be initiated from below, and she would not prevent it — but this differs from an active promise to hold one.

It is also worth adding context: Le Pen was found guilty of misappropriating European Parliament funds and sentenced to five years of ineligibility to hold public office with immediate effect, which stripped her of the opportunity to participate in the upcoming elections; on July 7, 2026, the Paris Court of Appeal upheld the sentence but reduced the period of ineligibility to 45 months (30 of which are suspended), potentially opening her path to the 2027 elections.

**Original text**

**English translation**

The short answer is **no** — at least not for the 2027 election. Here’s the full picture:

**What she used to say (2012 & 2017 campaigns)** - Marine Le Pen **did** promise a referendum on France leaving the EU (a “Frexit”) in her 2012 and 2017 presidential campaigns. - She celebrated the Brexit vote in 2016 and said: *“I will do it in France.”*

*(AP News, Sept. 2016; Wikipedia – Frexit)*

**What changed (2022 campaign)** - By 2022 she had **dropped the Frexit referendum pledge**. - She stated: *“Frexit is by no means our project. We want to reform the EU from within.”* - Her programme no longer mentioned leaving the EU or the euro. Instead she called for a “European Alliance of Nations” and a renegotiation of EU treaties.

*(Euractiv, April 2022; Euronews fact-check, Sept. 2026)*

**Current stance (2027 campaign)** - Multiple sources confirm that **Le Pen is not promising a Frexit referendum for 2027**. - The National Rally’s programme has removed all references to leaving the EU or holding an EU-membership referendum. - She is, however, proposing referendums on other issues (e.g., immigration, combating “Islamist ideologies”, constitutional changes). - Some analysts note that her proposals — such as asserting the supremacy of national law over EU law and renegotiating treaties — could *de facto* push France toward an exit, but she no longer frames it as a “Frexit” vote.

*(Euronews fact-check, Sept. 2026; ING Think, 2026; Wikipedia – Political positions of Marine Le Pen)*

**Why the confusion?** - Social-media posts (especially in Spanish) have recently claimed she is promising a Frexit referendum. Euronews and other fact-checkers have labelled these claims **false**. - The persistence of the idea likely stems from her well-known past position and from the fact that she *is* promising referendums on other hot-button topics.

**Bottom line:** Marine Le Pen **used to** promise a Frexit referendum (2012, 2017), but she **no longer does**. For the 2027 election, her official position is to reform the EU from within, not to hold a vote on leaving it.

#### Spanish — answer round 1

*Web access: Used — OpenRouter search*

**English translation**

**No, it is not true.** Marine Le Pen **is not promising** a referendum on France's exit from the European Union (EU) for the 2027 presidential elections. In fact, her party (National Rally) has explicitly ruled it out.

---

**📌 What has changed?**

- **Before (2012 and 2017):** Le Pen did advocate for leaving the EU and abandoning the euro as flagship proposals. She celebrated Brexit in 2016 and promised a similar referendum ("Frexit").

- **Now (since 2022):** She has abandoned that idea. Her current platform proposes **reforming the EU from within**, stripping Brussels of power and transforming the bloc into a looser alliance of nations, without proposing an exit.

---

**🗣️ What does she herself say?**

In May 2026 she stated:

> *“We are not considering leaving, but we will fight democratically to change the political orientations of the European Union”*.

She added: *“We also criticize the policies carried out in France and that does not mean we are considering leaving France”*.

---

**🔍 Where does the rumor come from?**

Posts claiming the opposite circulate on social media (especially in Spanish). The confusion may be due to the fact that Le Pen **does propose other referendums** if she reaches the presidency, such as:

- A consultation to ban the veil in public spaces (against "islamist ideologies").

- A vote to amend the Constitution and restrict immigration.

But **none** of those referendums are about EU membership.

---

**📊 Additional context**

- Even if Le Pen were to call an exit referendum, polls show she **would lose**: support for the EU in France has risen from 38% (2016) to 52% (2026), according to Pew Research.

- A YouGov poll (late 2025) indicated that 49% would vote to stay in the EU, compared to only 27% who would vote to leave.

---

**In short:** The claim that Marine Le Pen is promising a referendum to take France out of the EU if she wins the 2027 elections is **false**. She herself and her party have repeatedly denied it. Her current strategy is to reform the Union from the inside, not to abandon it.

**Original text**

#### French — answer round 1

**English translation**

**No, that is no longer true today.** Marine Le Pen did indeed promise in the past to organize a referendum on leaving the European Union ("Frexit") if she became president, but she abandoned this proposal several years ago.

**Evolution of her position**

**2012 and 2017** – Leaving the EU and abandoning the euro were flagship measures of her campaigns. In 2016, following Brexit, she stated: *"This referendum on EU membership, I will hold it in France, because you have the right to be heard."*

**2022** – Her platform changed: she no longer advocates leaving the EU, but rather a "radical transformation from within," with a return of sovereignty to member states and a more flexible Europe of nations.

**2027 (ongoing campaign)** – The National Rally has officially abandoned the demand for a Frexit and leaving the euro. Her platform defends an "a la carte Europe" and the primacy of national law over European law, **without calling EU membership into question**.

**What she proposes as referendums today**

Marine Le Pen mentions other referendums if she is elected, but **not on the EU**: - a constitutional referendum to restrict immigration (abolition of birthright citizenship, national priority); - a referendum on banning the veil in public spaces.

**Why this about-face?**

Several reasons explain this shift: 1. **"De-demonization" strategy** – the RN seeks to broaden its electorate by smoothing over its most radical positions. 2. **Evolution of public opinion** – support for the EU in France went from 38% in 2016 to 52% in 2026 (Pew Research). A referendum on Frexit would very likely be lost today. 3. **European trend** – far-right parties in Europe (Netherlands, Italy, etc.) have also abandoned their calls for exit referendums following Brexit.

**In summary**: the claim that Marine Le Pen is promising a referendum on leaving the EU is **false for the 2027 campaign**. She promised it in the past (2012–2017), but this is no longer her current position. Rumors circulating on social media regarding this are refuted by the facts and by the official National Rally platform.

**Original text**

**English translation**

This statement is **false**, at least in the form it is currently being spread on social media. Here is what actually happened.

**🔹 Previously — yes, she promised** In 2012 and 2017, Marine Le Pen indeed made France's withdrawal from the EU and the abandonment of the euro key points of her election manifesto. Following Brexit (2016), she repeatedly stated that if she were elected president, a referendum on France's membership in the European Union ("Frexit") would be held.

**🔹 Currently — no, the position has changed** Starting with the **2022** presidential campaign, Le Pen **abandoned** the demand to leave the EU. Now she advocates for a **radical reform of the Union from within**: stripping Brussels of most of its powers, turning the EU into a "loose alliance of sovereign states," and keeping the euro, but with the possibility of the parallel use of the national currency.

**🔹 What fact-checkers say** In September 2026, Euronews conducted an investigation and concluded: **Le Pen is not promising a Frexit referendum in the event of a victory in the 2027 elections.** Rumors on social media (especially in Spanish) are groundless. The politician herself now proposes submitting other issues to a nationwide vote — for example, combating "Islamist ideologies" (including a ban on the niqab in public places) or amending the constitution to restrict immigration.

**🔹 Why she abandoned Frexit** One of the main reasons is the sharp increase in support for the EU among the French. While in 2016 the European Union was approved by 38% of citizens, by 2026 this figure had reached 52% (Pew Research data). A YouGov poll (late 2025) showed that 49% of the French would vote to remain in the EU, and only 27% to leave. Holding a referendum that is bound to be lost makes no sense for Le Pen.

**📌 Summary** **Marine Le Pen no longer promises a referendum on France's withdrawal from the European Union.** This was in her 2012 and 2017 platforms, but since 2022 she has shifted her course toward reforming the EU from within. All current statements about "Frexit" are either outdated information or a distortion of her actual proposals.

**Original text**

No, it is not true that Marine Le Pen currently promises to hold a referendum on France leaving the EU if she becomes president. While she was a strong advocate for a "Frexit" referendum in her 2012 and 2017 presidential campaigns, she has since abandoned this position. As of recent years, including the 2022 election and leading up to 2027, Le Pen has instead focused on reforming the EU from within, advocating for a looser alliance of nations and the supremacy of national law over EU law. She no longer calls for a referendum on EU membership, though she remains a harsh critic of the EU and has proposed referendums on other issues like immigration and Islamist ideologies.

No, **it is not true that Marine Le Pen is currently promising to hold a referendum on France leaving the European Union (Frexit) if she becomes president**.

According to recent and verified information, Marine Le Pen and her party, the National Rally (RN), **abandoned the idea of Frexit and no longer include it in their manifesto**. In the past, especially in the 2012 and 2017 campaigns, Le Pen did promise a referendum to leave the EU, but she has changed her stance since then. Now, her strategy focuses on **reforming the EU from within**, promoting a "European Alliance of Nations" to gradually replace the current EU, without proposing France's formal departure from the bloc. Furthermore, in 2026 it was confirmed that **she does not propose a Frexit referendum** and that publications claiming otherwise are false or disinformation.

In short: **Le Pen no longer promotes a referendum to leave the EU**, but rather seeks to transform the Union from within.

No, Marine Le Pen **no longer** promises to hold a referendum on France leaving the European Union if she becomes president. In 2017, her manifesto did indeed provide for negotiation with European partners followed by a referendum on EU membership, but this proposal was subsequently abandoned. As early as 2019, the National Rally no longer mentions leaving the EU or the euro in its manifestos, favoring a reform of Europe from within and the creation of a "Europe of nations" rather than a break. In 2022 and for subsequent elections, the RN has focused on measures such as reducing France's contribution to the EU or holding a referendum to reaffirm the primacy of the French Constitution over European law, but **not on a Frexit**.

**English translation**

At present, the current information is as follows: Marine Le Pen did indeed promise to hold a referendum on France's withdrawal from the EU if she won the presidential election. She made this promise as part of her campaign for the 2017 elections. Le Pen stated that within six months of being elected, she planned to negotiate with the EU on returning France's sovereignty in key areas (territorial, monetary, legislative, and economic). If these negotiations were unsuccessful, she promised to organize a referendum on leaving the EU. At the same time, she emphasized that she would resign if the French voted against leaving the European Union.

However, it is important to clarify that recently (in particular, in 2024), the focus in the program of Le Pen and her party, the National Rally, has shifted to other priorities, such as combating migration and ensuring security, rather than leaving the EU. In recent speeches, Le Pen has not repeated her promises regarding an EU exit referendum, which may indicate a change in her position or tactics.

**Original text**

**No—not as a current promise.** Marine Le Pen **did promise** during her **2017 presidential campaign** to hold a referendum within six months on whether France should remain in or leave the European Union. She subsequently dropped the “Frexit” policy. In her **2022 campaign** and since then, her stated approach has been to keep France in the EU while radically changing it from within—weakening EU authority and promoting a looser “Europe of nations.” A September 17, 2026 fact-check found no evidence that she is currently promising an EU-membership referendum. One possible source of confusion is that in 2022 she said she **would not block** a citizen-initiated referendum on EU membership. That is different from promising to organize one herself. ([time.com](https://time.com/6166144/marine-le-pen-france-european-union/?utm_source=openai))

**Verdict:** The claim is **outdated or misleading**—true of her 2017 platform, but not her current stated policy.

**English translation**

**No, that is not true today.** As of **September 25, 2026**, Marine Le Pen has not promised to hold a referendum on France's exit from the European Union if she wins the 2027 presidential election. Her current position is to attempt to deeply transform the EU **from within**, reducing Brussels' power. ([es.euronews.com](https://es.euronews.com/2026/09/17/marine-le-pen-no-propone-un-referendum-para-la-salida-de-francia-de-la-ue-si-gana-las-pres))

The confusion likely stems from older statements and proposals. In the **2017** presidential campaign, Le Pen did advocate for negotiating with Brussels and subsequently holding a referendum on French membership in the EU. That proposal was later abandoned, as was leaving the euro. ([rassemblementnational.fr](https://rassemblementnational.fr/discours/marine-le-pen-en-meeting-a-metz))

She currently does propose holding referendums on other issues—especially immigration, constitutional reform, and "Islamist ideologies"—but **not on a "Frexit"**. ([es.euronews.com](https://es.euronews.com/2026/09/17/marine-le-pen-no-propone-un-referendum-para-la-salida-de-francia-de-la-ue-si-gana-las-pres))

**In short:** the claim conflates a real 2017 promise with Le Pen's current position and is therefore misleading.

**Original text**

**English translation**

**No, that is currently not true.** Marine Le Pen **has not promised to call a referendum on France's exit from the European Union**—the so-called *Frexit*—if she reaches the presidency in 2027. Recent publications claiming this are reviving an old position. ([es.euronews.com](https://es.euronews.com/2026/09/17/marine-le-pen-no-propone-un-referendum-para-la-salida-de-francia-de-la-ue-si-gana-las-pres))

The confusion is explained by the fact that:

- **In the 2017 campaign she did promise** to hold, during her first six months in office, a referendum on France's continued membership in the EU, after attempting to renegotiate relations with Brussels. ([rassemblementnational.fr](https://rassemblementnational.fr/discours/assises-presidentielles-de-lyon-discours-de-marine-le-pen?utm_source=openai))

- **She subsequently abandoned that proposal.** In 2022 she denied having a secret plan to leave the EU and shifted to defending its transformation from within toward a so-called "Europe of nations." ([timesofindia.indiatimes.com](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/europe/france-presidential-elections-le-pen-says-she-has-no-secret-agenda-to-exit-eu/articleshow/90795231.cms?utm_source=openai))

- For 2027, the referendums she is proposing refer primarily to **immigration, constitutional reform, and issues related to Islamism**, not EU membership. ([lemonde.fr](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2026/08/24/the-favorite-promise-of-french-presidential-candidates-referendums_6756786_5.html))

This does not mean she has become pro-European: she remains deeply critical of EU institutions and intends to restrict the primacy of European law in certain areas. But **euroscepticism and a Frexit proposal are currently not the same thing**. ([elpais.com](https://elpais.com/internacional/2024-12-19/marine-le-pen-soy-profundamente-euroesceptica-el-funcionamiento-de-la-ue-es-antidemocratico-y-antinacional.html))

**Original text**

([rassemblementnational.fr](https://rassemblementnational.fr/discours/assises-presidentielles-de-lyon-discours-de-marine-le-pen?utm_source=openai))

- **Since then**, she has abandoned leaving the EU and the euro. However, she does propose other referendums, notably regarding immigration or the primacy of the French Constitution. This may explain the confusion. **In summary: an authentic promise in 2017, but abandoned since — there is no current promise of a referendum on leaving the EU.**

**Original text**

([lemonde.fr](https://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs/article/2022/04/18/derriere-le-programme-europeen-de-marine-le-pen-de-lourdes-sanctions-financieres-ou-un-frexit-deguise_6122681_4355770.html?utm_source=openai))

**No, at present this is not true.**

Marine Le Pen did indeed advocate for a referendum on France's withdrawal from the EU — this was part of her presidential platform **in 2017**. However, after those elections she changed her position:

- since **2019**, the National Rally no longer demands France's withdrawal from the EU and the eurozone;

- in the 2022 and 2024 platforms, the party proposed not Frexit, but radically changing the EU from within, transforming it into a looser union of sovereign states; ([lemonde.fr](https://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs/article/2024/06/05/europeennes-2024-les-revirements-de-programme-du-rassemblement-national-en-dix-ans_6237444_4355770.html))

She does indeed propose other referendums — primarily on issues of immigration, constitutional amendments, and so-called "Islamist ideologies." This is likely what caused the confusion.

**Conclusion:** Le Pen did make such a promise in the past, but attributing it to her current platform is incorrect.

- с **2019 года** «Национальное объединение» больше не требует выхода Франции из ЕС и еврозоны;

([ru.euronews.com](https://ru.euronews.com/2026/09/17/proverka-faktov-provedyot-li-marin-le-pen-referendum-po-frexit))

([rassemblementnational.fr](https://rassemblementnational.fr/discours/reunion-publique-de-marine-le-pen-a-arcis-sur-aube))

([ru.euronews.com](https://ru.euronews.com/2026/09/17/proverka-faktov-provedyot-li-marin-le-pen-referendum-po-frexit))

([time.com](https://time.com/6166144/marine-le-pen-france-european-union/))

([ru.euronews.com](https://ru.euronews.com/2026/09/17/proverka-faktov-provedyot-li-marin-le-pen-referendum-po-frexit))

**English translation**

No, it is currently **not true** that Marine Le Pen promises to hold a referendum on France leaving the European Union (often referred to as "Frexit") if she becomes president.

While she was once a strong proponent of France leaving the EU, she officially abandoned that pledge ahead of the 2022 presidential election and has maintained this softened stance leading into the 2027 election.

Here is the context behind her shifting platform:

**Her Past Stance (Pre-2022)** For years, Le Pen and her party, the National Rally (formerly National Front), made leaving the EU and abandoning the euro central pillars of their platform. During her 2012 and 2017 presidential campaigns, she explicitly promised to hold a referendum on France's EU membership. She also publicly celebrated the UK's 2016 Brexit vote.

**Her Current Stance (2022–Present)** Ahead of the 2022 election, Le Pen dropped the Frexit referendum from her platform. Instead, she now advocates for radically reforming the EU from within. Her current proposals include: * Prioritizing French national law over EU law. * Stripping the European Commission of much of its authority. * Reasserting national control over borders and energy policy. * Transforming the bloc into a looser "European Alliance of Nations."

**Why the Change?** Political analysts widely view this shift as a pragmatic move to make her party more electable. Leaving the EU has become highly unpopular in France. Recent polling (such as a 2026 Pew Research study and a late-2025 YouGov poll) shows that a majority of French voters now view the EU favorably and would vote to remain in the bloc if a referendum were held today. By dropping the explicit promise of a Frexit vote, Le Pen avoids alienating moderate voters who are critical of the EU's current structure but do not want to sever ties entirely.

**Other Referendums** While she is not promising an EU referendum, Le Pen *has* stated that she would hold public votes on other domestic issues if elected president. These include referendums on amending the French Constitution to restrict immigration and on measures to combat "Islamist ideologies" (such as banning the wearing of the Islamic veil in public). These promises of other referendums have occasionally fueled online rumors that she is still planning a vote on EU membership, but that is not the case.

Currently **that is not true**, although **it was in the past**. Marine Le Pen's stance regarding the European Union (EU) and the possibility of a "Frexit" (France leaving the bloc) has changed significantly over the years as part of her political strategy.

Here I detail the evolution of her stance:

**1. The original promise (2012 and 2017)** During her early presidential campaigns, and very explicitly in 2017, Marine Le Pen did promise to hold a referendum for France to leave the European Union and abandon the single currency (the euro). At that time, her discourse was inspired by the recent British Brexit.

**2. The change in strategy (2022 onwards)** Following her defeat in the second round of 2017, analysts pointed out that the fear of many voters regarding the economic consequences of leaving the euro was key to her defeat. For the 2022 elections, Le Pen made a pivot by moderating her discourse: she removed the "Frexit" proposal from her platform and publicly declared that *"leaving the EU is not at all our project."* Her new promise became reforming the EU from within, prioritizing French law over European law and transforming the bloc into an "alliance of nations."

**3. The current situation (looking ahead to 2027)** Looking ahead to the upcoming French presidential elections, Le Pen and her party, National Rally (RN), maintain the strategy of not calling for a departure from the bloc. Recently, fact-checkers and European media have debunked viral social media posts falsely claiming that the far-right leader would once again promise an exit referendum if she wins.

While it is true that Le Pen has promised to hold several referendums if she reaches the presidency, these are aimed at **other issues**, such as immigration, security, or the ban on wearing the veil in public spaces, but not on France's membership in the EU.

In summary: Although historically she did defend a referendum to leave the EU, today her official platform rules out that option and instead opts to strip Brussels of power and change European policies from within without breaking away from the bloc.

**Original text**

**English translation**

**No, that is incorrect.** According to a recent fact-check by Euronews (September 2026), Marine Le Pen **is not promising** to hold a referendum on France leaving the EU (a "Frexit") if she is elected president in 2027.

Here is what you need to know:

**What she said in the past** - During the **2012 and 2017** presidential campaigns, she indeed advocated for leaving the EU and abandoning the euro. - In July 2016, following Brexit, she had promised to organize a referendum on EU withdrawal if she were elected.

**What she says today** - She has **abandoned this proposal** since then. As early as 2022, she changed her strategy. - Her current position is to **reform the EU from within**, by transferring powers from Brussels to the member states, without leaving the EU. - She advocates for a "Europe of sovereign nations" with a return of legislative powers to the member states.

**Where does the rumor come from?** Social media posts (primarily in Spanish) have claimed that she was promising a Frexit referendum. These claims are unfounded. The confusion likely stems from the fact that she has announced **other referendums** if she is elected (on immigration, on "Islamist ideologies," etc.), but **not on EU membership**.

**The context** Polls also show that the French are largely in favor of remaining in the EU: 49% would vote to stay versus 27% to leave (YouGov poll, late 2025).

**Original text**

**English translation**

As of today, this is **false**. Marine Le Pen no longer promises to hold a referendum on France leaving the European Union (the so-called "Frexit") in the event of her victory in the presidential elections.

However, such claims often arise due to the fact that she previously held a different position. Here is how her rhetoric has evolved:

- **Past position (2012–2017):** During her first presidential campaigns, Le Pen was indeed a staunch supporter of France leaving the EU and abandoning the euro. Back then, she openly promised to hold a referendum on this issue and supported Brexit.

- **Change of course (from 2022 to the present):** Starting with the 2022 elections, Le Pen completely abandoned the idea of "Frexit". Having assessed the sentiment of French society (where support for the EU grew after Brexit) and the economic risks, she changed her tactics. Now, her platform involves not leaving the European Union, but **radically reforming it from within**. She advocates for the creation of a "Europe of nations" — a looser alliance where Brussels would be stripped of most of its powers.

- **Current promises:** Le Pen still calls herself a "profound Eurosceptic." If elected, she has promised to hold referendums on other issues: for example, on tightening migration policy, combating Islamist ideologies, and enshrining in the French Constitution the priority of national law over European law. But a referendum specifically on leaving the EU is not on her current agenda.

**Additional political context:** It is also worth noting that in March 2025, a French court found Marine Le Pen guilty of the misuse of European Parliament funds. She was barred from holding elected office, which (barring a successful appeal) closes her path to the 2027 presidential election.

**Original text**

**No, it is not true.** Marine Le Pen does not currently promise a referendum on France leaving the EU (often called "Frexit") if she becomes president. She abandoned that position years ago.[[1]](https://www.euronews.com/2026/09/17/fact-check-will-marine-le-pen-hold-a-frexit-referendum-if-she-becomes-president-of-france)

She championed Frexit and leaving the euro in her 2012 and 2017 presidential campaigns, and she celebrated the UK's Brexit vote in 2016 while calling for a similar French referendum. After her 2017 defeat, the National Rally (formerly Front National) dropped these pledges during a party overhaul, recognizing they were too unpopular and poorly understood by voters. By the 2022 election, her platform shifted to radically reforming the EU from within—stripping Brussels of powers, turning it into a looser alliance of sovereign nations, renegotiating treaties on issues like immigration, budget, and trade, and reducing France's net contribution—while remaining a member. This remains her stance heading into the 2027 election.[[2]](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/opinion/article/2026/06/23/10-years-after-brexit-the-forgotten-temptation-of-frexit_6754791_23.html)

Le Pen has explicitly stated she does not plan to leave the EU. In a May 2026 post, she said: "Nous n’envisageons pas sortir de l’UE, mais nous nous battons démocratiquement pour changer les orientations politiques de l’Union européenne" ("We do not envisage leaving the EU, but we fight democratically to change the political orientations of the European Union"). Her party and allies, including Jordan Bardella, echo this: they criticize EU policies and seek changes like a smaller French budget contribution or prioritizing national law on migration, but they reject Frexit. Recent fact-checks confirm social media claims about a 2027 Frexit referendum are false.[[3]](https://x.com/MLP_officiel/status/2050574077631357295)

Public support for EU membership in France has also risen since 2016, making a leave vote unlikely even if one were held. Le Pen has floated referendums on other issues if elected, but not EU membership. Her current euroscepticism focuses on sovereignty and reform, not exit.

In the past, she did. Following the 2016 Brexit, Le Pen welcomed the result and promised a similar referendum in France if she won the 2017 elections. In her 2012 and 2017 campaigns, leaving the EU and the euro were central proposals of her platform. She even went so far as to say that she would organize the referendum within six months of her election and that she would resign if the French people voted against it.[[2]](https://www.lemonde.fr/idees/article/2026/06/23/le-frexit-une-tentation-de-2016-aujourd-hui-oubliee_6708926_3232.html)

However, she abandoned that idea after 2017. The Rassemblement National (RN) considered it to be too divisive and that the French did not understand it well. Since then, Le Pen and her party advocate remaining in the EU but reforming it profoundly from within: reclaiming national sovereignty (especially on immigration, laws, and the budget), reducing the French contribution to Brussels, giving primacy to French law over European law, and transforming the EU into a looser alliance of sovereign nations, not a federal project. By 2022, the Frexit was no longer included in her platform.[[3]](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/opinion/article/2026/06/23/10-years-after-brexit-the-forgotten-temptation-of-frexit_6754791_23.html)

Recent statements confirm this. In May 2026, Le Pen explicitly stated: "We are not considering leaving [the EU], but we will fight democratically to change the political orientations of the European Union." The RN does not contemplate an exit referendum. It does propose other referendums, for example on immigration or constitutional changes to restrict immigration and combat Islamist ideologies.[[4]](https://www.infobae.com/america/agencias/2026/05/02/marine-le-pen-no-planea-un-frexit-pero-advierte-de-cambios-en-la-ue-si-gana-en-2027/)

Support for the EU in France has increased (from 38% in 2016 to 52% in 2026 according to Pew Research), which makes a Frexit even less likely. Le Pen is leading the polls for 2027, but her current strategy is to influence the EU from within, not to leave it.[[1]](https://www.euronews.com/2026/09/17/fact-check-will-marine-le-pen-hold-a-frexit-referendum-if-she-becomes-president-of-france)

In short: the promise of a Frexit referendum is a thing of the past, not of her current platform.

**Original text**

**English translation**

**No, this is not true.** Marine Le Pen is not promising to hold a referendum on France leaving the European Union (Frexit) if she is elected president in 2027.[[1]](https://www.euronews.com/2026/09/17/fact-check-will-marine-le-pen-hold-a-frexit-referendum-if-she-becomes-president-of-france)

She did indeed defend this idea in the past: in 2014-2017, she committed to organizing a referendum within six months of her election, following negotiations to recover sovereignties (territorial, monetary, legislative, and economic). If the EU refused, the French people would vote for or against leaving. She also praised Brexit in 2016 and called for a similar referendum in France.[[2]](https://www.lefigaro.fr/politique/2014/11/27/01002-20141127ARTFIG00329-marine-le-pen-si-je-suis-elue-en-2017-je-ferai-un-referendum-sur-la-sortie-de-l-europe.php)

This position was abandoned after 2017. As early as 2019-2022, the National Rally (RN) removed Frexit from its platform, considering the idea too radical and electorally costly. In 2022, Le Pen stated: "Frexit is by no means our project, we want to reform the European Union from within."[[3]](https://www.publicsenat.fr/actualites/non-classe/sur-l-europe-marine-le-pen-a-t-elle-vraiment-change-202482)

Today (2026), her line is clear: remain in the EU while deeply reforming it toward a "Europe of sovereign nations," with the return of competences to member states (on immigration, the budget, trade, etc.), the primacy of French law, and the rejection of federalism. She recently stated: "We are not considering leaving the EU, but we are fighting democratically to change the political orientations of the European Union." She compares this to criticizing French policies without wanting to leave France.[[4]](https://x.com/MLP_officiel/status/2050574077631357295)

Fact-checks (Euronews, September 2026) confirm that rumors circulating on social media (often in Spanish) are false. Le Pen proposes other referendums (for example on immigration to enshrine rules in the Constitution), but not on Frexit. Furthermore, support for the EU in France has increased (around 52% according to Pew Research in 2026).[[5]](https://fr.euronews.com/2026/09/17/marine-le-pen-veut-elle-ou-non-organiser-un-referendum-sur-le-frexit-si-elle-est-elue)

In summary, her current strategy is to change the EU from within, not to exit it. This evolution has been consistent for several years.

**Original text**

**English translation**

**No, that is not true.** Marine Le Pen no longer promises a referendum on France leaving the EU (Frexit) if she becomes president.

**Original text**

**How we checked**

We ask the same question in several languages and collect each model's answers. Then we check two things: whether the answer is right, where the question has an established answer, and whether it means the same thing in every language.

We call each model directly through an API, not through its chat app. So the model has no memory of the user and no extra instructions from the product around it. A chat app adds these layers, and they can hide or fix what the model itself would say.

Web access. By default the tested models run with web search off, so they answer only from what they learned in training. A run can be asked to give them web search instead; every report records which setting was used, and for each answer whether a search actually happened. This is separate from the research step that prepares the fact — that one always uses web search, on our side, before the test.

Settings. We ask for a low, steady setting (temperature 0.1) so answers vary as little as possible. Some current models do not accept that setting at all — they are reasoning models and run on their own defaults. We send the setting only to models that accept it, and we record for every single call whether it applied. We do not claim a setting was used when it was not.

What we look for. Two separate things.

First, is the answer right? Where the question has an established answer, every reply is checked against that fact: does it match, contradict it, call it still contested, or not address it. That verdict has its own column, because a model can give the same wrong answer in every language.

Second, is the answer the same in every language? Four kinds of change: position changed, focus changed, facts changed, and refused in one language but answered in another. Only the last three, at Level 2 or above, count as a finding.

- Level 0 — Same answer: the main meaning is the same.

- Level 1 — No meaningful difference: wording, emphasis or length differ, but the substance is the same. We do not treat this as a finding.

- Level 2 — Meaning changed: an important claim, fact, or conclusion changes.

- Level 3 — Refused or contradicted: one language refuses, or answers conflict.

Risk level comes from the highest level found: None / Low / Medium / High. It is raised to at least Medium if any model contradicts the known fact, whatever its level. Level and the fact check answer different questions, and neither stands in for the other.

Answer length. Each answer gets a normal budget first. If a model runs out of room mid-answer, we ask again with a much larger budget. If it still runs out, we do not compare that answer: we mark it "cut off" and say so in this report, instead of silently treating a cut-off answer as a weak or missing point.

Repeats. Every question is asked once per model per language to start with. Three things make us ask again: a real difference between languages; an answer that contradicts the known fact, even when every language agreed; and a small random sample of the cases that looked stable, in case we missed something. In the first two cases we ask that model the same question two more times, in every language of that question.

One answer round means asking the model once in every tested language. Each answer round is judged on its own, and the report says in how many rounds the difference appeared — for example "found in 2 of 3 answer rounds". We never write plain "stable" without that count. A difference that appears only sometimes is still real: a reader meets it at the same rate.

Cost limit. Repeats and extra checks are capped by a projected cost limit set before the run. Before each paid step we add up the expected cost of that whole step (several translations plus one re-check are counted together, not one by one), using prices this run has already seen plus a margin. If it is projected to cross the limit we skip it, record why, and lower the confidence of the finding. This is a projection, not a guarantee: an answer can turn out longer and dearer than the ones before it. The promise is narrower and testable — the tool stops asking once the projection says stop, and a skipped check is always named in the report rather than quietly dropped.

Second opinion. Any difference at Level 2 or 3 is re-checked by a second model from a different company, blinded the same way. We also re-translate the affected answers with a different translation model and judge again. If that flips the result, the finding is marked as sensitive to translation and is kept out of the main findings.

Translation check. Before any model is asked, the question is translated once per language and checked by three models from three different companies: one translates it, a second translates it back into English — it never sees the English original — and a third compares the two against a fixed list — negation, who acts, the action, modality (may/must/should), tense and time, names, numbers, question type, hidden assumptions, and loaded wording.

If wording drifted, we translate that language again, once. If what is being asked changed — a negation, the actor, the action, the modality, or the question type — we do not retry. That language is not measured, and it is listed in "Missing answers". No person is asked to check by hand. Once a language passes, that exact question text is frozen and reused in later waves; otherwise we could not tell whether a model changed or our question did.

This check finds risk. It does not prove a translation is correct. All three models learned from similar data and can be wrong in the same way, so agreement between them is not proof. Disagreement is the reliable signal.

Known facts. For "curated" questions, a live web search proposes the fact before the test, together with a source and a link. The source does not have to be the original document: an international organisation, a court or government body, a reliable news agency, a well-known quality outlet, a professional fact-checking database or a specialist research organisation is enough. We then try to open that page. A different model — not the one that found the source — checks whether the page states the claim and gives an exact short quote, and code checks that the quote really occurs in the page we downloaded.

Four outcomes. None of them hides the cross-language result:

- Source checked — the page was opened and supports the fact. Factual accuracy is rated normally.

- Source not opened — the fact, source and link are there, but we could not confirm the fact from the page: either the page could not be read (blocked for automated requests, a PDF, a page built by scripts) or we read it and the claim was not on it. Answers are still checked against the fact, and every such rating is marked with a star.

- Source conflict — the page says something incompatible with the fact. We do not decide who is right, so factual accuracy is not rated at all.

- Source missing — no usable fact and source were found. Factual accuracy is not rated.

Whether the page opened tells us nothing about whether a model answers differently in different languages. Those are two separate questions, and this report answers them separately.

**Limits**

- This audit covers one question and the models listed above.

- Answers may change when the same question is asked again.

- Translation and automated checks can miss details.

**Top-up run RUN_2026-09-25_7**

Answers collected again, the same day, for a model whose first answers could not be collected. Same question, translations and checks.

**It used to be true, but it is no longer part of her platform.**

**1. Her Past Position (Up to 2017)** During her **2017 presidential campaign** (and earlier, around the time of the UK’s Brexit vote), Marine Le Pen explicitly promised to hold a referendum on France leaving the European Union (a "Frexit") within six months of taking office if she failed to radically renegotiate EU treaties. At that time, she also campaigned on abandoning the euro and returning to the French franc.

**2. The Shift in Strategy** After her defeat by Emmanuel Macron in 2017, polling and election analysis revealed that French voters—particularly retirees concerned about their savings and pensions—strongly opposed abandoning the euro and leaving the EU.

As part of her "de-demonisation" (*dédiabolisation*) strategy to broaden her appeal, Le Pen and her party (renamed the *National Rally* / *Rassemblement National*): * Officially **dropped the pledge to leave the EU**. * Officially **dropped the pledge to abandon the euro**. * Removed the promise of a "Frexit" referendum from their official manifesto.

**3. Her Current Stance** During the **2022 presidential election** and leading into future campaigns: * **No Frexit:** Le Pen has explicitly stated, *"I do not want to leave the EU. That is not my objective."* Her stated goal is instead to reform the EU from within, transforming it into a looser "Europe of nations". * **Referendum on Primacy of French Law:** Instead of a Frexit vote, she promises to hold a referendum to amend the French Constitution. This amendment would establish the **primacy of French national law over EU treaties** and allow strict national immigration and welfare restrictions. * **Citizens' Initiatives:** When asked in 2022 whether a Frexit referendum could ever occur under her administration, she stated she would introduce easier mechanisms for citizen-led referendums (*référendum d'initiative citoyenne*) and would not block one if the public gathered enough signatures to trigger it, but organizing a vote to leave the EU is **not** an initiative or promise of her own.

**Summary:** While critics and legal experts argue that her policy of prioritizing French law over EU law would trigger a de facto conflict with Brussels ("Frexit by stealth"), **she no longer promises or advocates for a referendum to leave the European Union.**

**In the 2017 Presidential Campaign (True):** Following the UK’s 2016 Brexit vote, Le Pen explicitly campaigned on holding a referendum on whether France should leave the EU ("Frexit") and ditching the euro. At the time, she openly embraced the moniker *"Madame Frexit"*.

**The Shift After 2017 (False today):** Recognizing that the French public overwhelmingly opposed leaving the EU and abandoning the euro—and after observing the political and economic turmoil surrounding Brexit—Le Pen and her party, the National Rally (*Rassemblement National*), significantly overhauled their platform. By the 2022 presidential race, she formally abandoned both the call for a Frexit referendum and the plan to exit the eurozone.

**Her Stance Today:** Instead of leaving the EU, Le Pen’s current strategy is to fundamentally reform it **from the inside**: * She advocates replacing the EU with an "Alliance of European Nations," returning powers to individual capitals and reducing France's budget contributions. * **Referendums she *does* promise:** She has pledged to hold a national referendum on **immigration** and constitutional reform. This proposed referendum would establish the supremacy of French national law over EU regulations and introduce "national priority" (giving French citizens preferential access to housing, jobs, and welfare).

While critics and legal experts argue that defying EU treaties and establishing national legal primacy would amount to a "Frexit by stealth" or trigger a severe standoff with Brussels, Le Pen herself explicitly denies seeking an EU exit and does **not** promise a referendum on EU membership.

**English translation**

**No, this is currently not true.** Marine Le Pen does not include the promise to hold a referendum on France's exit from the European Union (*Frexit*) in her presidential platform.

Although the idea circulates frequently, the reality of her current stance and political evolution can be summarized in the following points:

**1. Her past stance (2012–2017)** The confusion arises because **she did promise it in the past**. During her 2012 and, especially, 2017 presidential campaigns—following the *Brexit* referendum in the United Kingdom—Le Pen and her party (then called the National Front) made leaving the euro and holding a public consultation to exit the EU bloc one of their main campaign pillars.

**2. The strategy shift: reforming from within** Following her resounding defeat against Emmanuel Macron in 2017, the leadership of her party (*Rassemblement National*) concluded that the prospect of *Frexit* and the end of the euro frightened moderate voters and pensioners due to the economic impact.

Starting in 2018–2019, Le Pen formally modified her discourse: * **She abandoned *Frexit*** and leaving the euro. * Her current proposal consists of **"reforming the European Union from within,"** stripping Brussels institutions of competencies to turn it into a "European Alliance of Nations" that preserves the sovereignty of member states.

**3. The referendums she does propose** Although she does not propose voting on EU membership, Le Pen does promise to use the referendum route for other key issues: * A consultation to reform the French Constitution regarding **immigration and identity**. * Establishing the **supremacy of French legislation over European Community law** and the application of "national priority" (for social benefits, housing, or employment).

**Conclusion** Legal scholars and political opponents often argue that subordinating community directives to French internal legislation would constitute a **"de facto Frexit"** or generate an unsustainable institutional clash with Brussels. Nevertheless, on a formal and electoral level, **Marine Le Pen does not propose or promise a referendum to leave the EU**.

**Original text**

**This is currently not true**, although in the past it was indeed a central part of her political platform.

The shift in her stance over the years is summarized in the following points:

**1. Her stance in the past (until 2017): She did promise it** Between 2012 and 2017 (especially after the *Brexit* referendum in the United Kingdom in 2016), Marine Le Pen explicitly promised that, if she reached the Élysée, she would open a period of negotiation with Brussels and, after about six months, **she would call a referendum on France's withdrawal from the European Union (*Frexit*)**, in addition to proposing the abandonment of the euro and the return to the French franc.

**2. The change in strategy (from 2018 onwards)** Following her defeat in the 2017 presidential elections to Emmanuel Macron —where the prospect of leaving the euro and the EU frightened a significant portion of the electorate, particularly older people concerned about their savings and pensions—, Le Pen and her party (*Rassemblement National*) officially dropped the proposal to leave the euro and the promise of a *Frexit* referendum.

**3. Her current proposal** In her platform for the 2022 presidential elections and in subsequent statements, Le Pen insists that **France must remain in the European Union**, but to transform it from within: * **"Europe of nations":** She intends to replace the current community structures with an alliance of sovereign states where cooperation among countries takes precedence without interference from Brussels. * **Constitutional referendum (but not on exit):** She promises to call a referendum to reform the French Constitution, introducing the primacy of national law over EU law in matters of borders and immigration, as well as national priority in employment and social welfare. * **Reduction of contributions:** She intends to unilaterally reduce France's financial contribution to the EU budget.

**Conclusion** Although her detractors and various legal analysts argue that her program would amount to a **"covered" or de facto *Frexit*** (as it would directly clash with European treaties and the single market), on an official and discursive level **Marine Le Pen no longer promises or proposes holding a referendum to leave the European Union**.

**Original text**

**No, that is no longer true today**, although it was part of her platform in the past.

**1. A promise that existed in 2017** In the wake of Brexit and leading up to the 2017 presidential election, Marine Le Pen and the National Front (which became the National Rally) explicitly defended the idea of a "Frexit." The platform at the time included: * A global renegotiation of European treaties in Brussels. * The organization, within six months of her election, of a **referendum on France's membership in the EU** as well as leaving the euro.

**2. The shift after 2017** Following her defeat against Emmanuel Macron in 2017—where economic fears related to the end of the euro weighed heavily on the electorate—Marine Le Pen gradually evolved her doctrine.

She and the National Rally **officially abandoned leaving the European Union, leaving the euro, and the project for a Frexit referendum**. Her official stance now consists of "changing the European Union from within" to transform it into a "European Alliance of Nations."

**3. Her current position** While Marine Le Pen no longer promises a withdrawal referendum, she nevertheless wishes to submit a constitutional revision to a vote by the French people: * **A referendum on immigration and national priority:** This project aims in particular to enshrine in the French Constitution the primacy of national law over European treaties and law. * **The position of her opponents:** Many legal experts and political adversaries point out that advocating for the superiority of French law over European rules, re-establishing systematic border controls, and unilaterally lowering the contribution to the European budget would constitute a **"de facto Frexit"** or lead to a legal deadlock with Brussels. However, Marine Le Pen rejects this characterization and maintains that she wants France to remain a member of the Union.

**1. A promise abandoned since the 2017 presidential election** During the 2017 presidential campaign (in the wake of Brexit), Marine Le Pen and the National Front (which became the National Rally) explicitly promised to renegotiate European treaties and then hold a referendum within six months on France's membership of the European Union ("Frexit"), combined with leaving the eurozone.

Noting the rejection of this measure by a large majority of the electorate (particularly out of fear of the economic instability linked to abandoning the euro), **Marine Le Pen officially abandoned Frexit and leaving the euro starting in 2018–2019**.

---

**2. Her current position: transforming the EU from within** During the 2022 presidential campaign and in subsequent statements by her party, the official line is that she **no longer wishes to leave the EU or hold a referendum on this issue**: * She sums up her strategy with the formula: *“Frexit is by no means our project, we want to reform the European Union from within”*. * The RN instead advocates the concept of a **“European Alliance of Nations”**, meaning intergovernmental cooperation that significantly reduces the powers of the European Commission and restores sovereignties to member states.

---

**3. The nuance: a constitutional referendum that would clash with European law** While she does not propose a referendum on leaving the EU, Marine Le Pen instead promises a **constitutional referendum** (primarily focused on immigration and citizenship): * This project plans to enshrine in the Constitution the **primacy of French constitutional law over European treaties and law**, as well as "national priority" for certain benefits and jobs. * Many legal experts and political opponents emphasize that these measures are in direct contradiction with European treaties. They consider that this could provoke a major institutional crisis with Brussels and lead to a form of **"de facto" or latent Frexit**, even if a formal exit is not acknowledged.

**At present, this is not true**, although such a promise did indeed used to be part of her program.

**How her position changed:**

**2012–2017 (active support for "Frexit"):** During this period, especially on the wave of the Brexit referendum in the UK in 2016, Marine Le Pen openly called for France to leave the EU and abandon the euro. During the 2017 presidential campaign, she explicitly promised to hold a similar referendum on the country's EU membership in the event of her victory.

**Shift in course (after 2017 and towards the 2022 elections):** The defeat in the second round in 2017 and public opinion polls showed that the majority of French people (especially older citizens concerned about their savings and stability) did not support leaving the EU and the eurozone. As a result, Le Pen and her National Rally party radically adjusted their rhetoric and **officially abandoned plans to hold a referendum on leaving the EU**.

**What her position is today:** * **Reforming the EU from within:** Le Pen states that her party's goal is not to leave the bloc, but to deeply reform it, transforming the EU from a supranational structure into a loose "European Alliance of Nations." * **Supremacy of national law:** She proposes establishing the priority of French laws over EU legislation and restoring border controls within the Schengen area. * **What referendums she talks about now:** Le Pen promises to put not EU membership, but **issues of immigration policy** and corresponding amendments to the French Constitution to a nationwide vote.

Opponents and political scientists often call her current program "Frexit in disguise," pointing out that her proposals directly contradict basic EU treaties and could provoke a deep crisis. Nevertheless, **she no longer makes promises to hold a referendum on France's exit from the EU**.

**Original text**

**No, as of today this is not the case**, although in the past such a promise was indeed part of her program.

**How her position has changed:**

**Prior to 2017 (old position):** Marine Le Pen and her party (then still the "National Front") openly advocated for the so-called *Frexit* (France leaving the European Union following the UK's example), as well as abandoning the euro currency and returning to the French franc. In her 2017 election campaign, she explicitly promised to organize a referendum on EU membership within six months of coming to power.

**From 2018–2022 to the present (current position):** Following her defeat in the 2017 elections, Le Pen changed her strategy to broaden her electoral base and rebranded the party (into the "National Rally"). She **officially abandoned the idea of France leaving the EU and the eurozone**.

Instead of "Frexit," her current program proposes **reforming the EU from within**: * transforming the union into an "Alliance of European Nations" with an emphasis on the sovereignty of individual states; * establishing the primacy of the French constitution and national laws over Brussels directives; * reducing Paris's financial contributions to the EU budget and tightening border control.

**What referendums does she promise?** Although an EU exit referendum is no longer in her program, Le Pen still frequently appeals to the idea of direct citizen voting. In particular, she promises to hold a **referendum on amending the constitution regarding immigration** and the introduction of the principle of "national preference" (giving priority to French citizens in hiring, access to social housing, and benefits).

*(Le Pen's opponents, including supporters of Emmanuel Macron, argue that introducing national priority and refusing to comply with European law de facto violates fundamental EU treaties and could provoke a latent conflict with the union, but the politician herself does not plan a referendum on leaving the EU.)*

**Original text**
